My (Pinterest-Inspired) Halloween Party

A few months ago I joined the Pinterest bandwagon. I am actually quite impressed with myself that I am up and running on pinterest because I feel like nowadays there are so many "new" internet/social media/networking-ish sites that I can't keep up. Twitter would be one of those sites. I know for a lot of people pinterest can be a big time-consumer and suck you in. I don't have the attention span to look for too long - so maybe 5-10 minutes a day I'll take a quick look and pin a few things. I also haven't gotten into following people or uploading my own pins...baby steps!

If you looked at my "boards" you would see my more robust ones are around crafts, parties and organization. People have brilliant ideas out there and I love seeing things that I would have never thought of (but want to incorporate)!

So far I haven't done much with what I have pinned...until now that is. The holiday craft/party ideas are just out of this world and I have been so excited to use some of the ideas. So our Halloween party last night started as just a low-key, pumpkin carving "get together" that, of course, went aray immediately! A seperate post on that later...this post is dedicated to my "pins" coming to fruition! lol!

This wasn't a specific copy of any one idea, I just noticed a lot of people are making banners for their mantals and I love it! I think I will do one for Thanksgiving as well. Crafts can get expensive so I try to be creative with what I have to buy vs what I can use from home. This fun little project was under $5 - thanks to the paper being 75% off at Michaels!

Now this I cannot take credit for, nor did the idea come from Pinterest - but it might have well as. This was Tracey's creation. Amazing cheese balls with crasins and goat cheese in the middle. I think this might have been the hit of the night!!!

I loved this idea - worms in the ice-cubes. I waited until everyone had arrived to put them in. It looked soooo cute, however, I will say, more for looks because the worms left a residue in the water and it looked kind of gross. Maybe next time I will rinse the worms in water to get that chalky stuff off and then put them in the icecube tray.

so cute!
This is from Pinterest, and I bought all of the ingredients to make them and last minute Matt said we had too many desserts so I decided to wait and make them today for work tomorrow. BUT...looks like it was meant to be because Laura brought them!!!!

This was a spinoff from an idea I saw. I used cups I found at the dollar store ($1 for 6 cups). Bought off brand oreos (sorry guys), but two oreos at the bottom of the cup to take up space, jello mix (we all know how cheap jello is - and lucky for me idiot proof to make), another package of gummy worms, milano cookies and black icing I already had. The wine glass in the middle was more for decoration. I bought two wine glasses from the dollar store as well as the candy and used them as the centerpieces for the RIP desserts. The plate underneath is also from the dollar store. This creation total...closer to $18...but cute and tasty so I will say worth it!

The dessert table. My mom made the table runner for me (matches my kitchen tablecloth). Side note: I am a huge fan of the lime green/bright purple color combo for Halloween! In the center I made little caramel apple bites - idea from pinterest. This was a huge fail. I just looked at the picture and didn't actually look up how to make them. I assumed apples and melted caramel squares. They were NOT good. The caramel was so hard I thought it was going to break off a tooth. So I learned a few lessons: one apple gets a lot of bite squares, so no need to buy 10 apples (luckily apples can just become this weeks lunch snack so no harm not foul); also don't use the caramel that I used...someone suggested the caramel syrup that you would use on ice cream. BUT...as you can see it looked so cute so I gave everyone the disclaimer that they were for decoration only!!!

Our First Fall

Well today's blog title is a little misleading. Obviously Fall comes every year, but this is the first year we get to enjoy the Fall season in our new(ish) home. My Fall decor was lacking a bit in the apartment. With the smaller space we would decorate for Halloween and Christmas, but besides a few kitchen towels, we didn't do much for Fall/Thanksgiving. So this year I have been having so much fun getting into the full "Fall" holiday spirit. I have started overlapping the Halloween and Fall/Thanksgiving decorations - I just love that pumpkins work for both Holidays!

The best part of my Fall decorating is that it is the perfect excuse for some girltime! You might remember the Fall Wreath-making date I had with Laura. Well a few weeks ago Jena came over and we worked on a fun little entryway setup! We tested it at my house, took a picture and she was able to recreate at her house that night. Bonus: getting to see sweet Bella for a few hours! Matt even offered to babysit while we ran to Michaels and Hobby Lobby! What a guy!!!

We made a wreath for Jena

The final set up - Thank you Michaels for putting all of your holiday decorations 1/2 off!!! I love the idea of using a pumpkin as a vase - although technically it was Michaels' idea...not mine.

I didn't get around to taking a picture of the outside set up before it got dark tonight...so stay tuned!

High Tea

Kelly's mom, my Aunt Laura, was in town this weekend and Saturday they invited me to join them for High Tea at Chocolate Angel.  It was so much fun! The perfect little setup for a fabulously fancy tea!

Email Break

The title of this post is in relation to work emails. I recently accepted a position with a new company...same industry...and took full advantage of the unique period of time (2.5 weeks) where you technically work for no one and do not have to respond to any emails! So weird! I spent a large part of my time off visiting my mom and dad (as well as some extended family). They both spontaneously took days off to hang out with me and it was so nice to get some much needed quality time with each of them!

My travels first brought me to Vermont to see my dad. We had a blast enjoying the end of leave changing season. I just barely made it - and the scenary was unbelievable!

Apple Cider Mill - LOVED IT!

I think I had the best apple of my life this trip!

Tour of the capitol
After several days in Vermont my dad and I drove to Connecticut to visit his side of the family. Bonus: getting to meet second cousin Alex for the first time! What a sweetie!

Sanja, Dad, baby Alex, Michael and little Gabriel

On Saturday we went to take a tour of Mark Twain's house. It was really interesting. Today he would have spent about $50 million on the house. They wouldn't let us take any pictures inside of the house :-(

My dad and his two brothers

After a weekend in Connecticut I headed down to Jackson to visit Nathan and my mom. I already posted the pumpkin carving pics. In addition to getting in the holiday spirit we spent a significant amount of time sitting outside sipping on hot coffee! That and some organizing, painting and shopping!

One more day of "facation" (fake vacation) and it will be like the first day of school again!

Wish me luck!

Pumpkin Carving 101

This year I participated in the 3rd annual Nathan and Amy pumpkin carving contest. It has been a couple of years since I carved a pumpkin and I forgot how much FUN it is! For that reason, sometime before Halloween Matt and I will carve some pumpkins of our own!

Nathan picked up 4 pumpkins and we chose numbers. I had number 1 so I got to pick the first pumpkin but got last pick up the template.

yucky guts!

Please note the top outline of my pumpkin. IMO I should have received bonus points for that - alas nothing!

We decided Matt would be the judge via facetime

1st place - mom
2nd place - Amy

3rd place - ME
4th (i.e. last) place - Nathan (although I did love his!)

Thanks Nathan!

Introducing Frank

I couldn't resist myself. You might recall that Matt and I got little Sam a "red fish & blue fish" for his Dr. Suess themed birthday (see pic here). Well when we were over at their house last week Steph had upgraded the little fishies to big bowls with live plants. She said the guy at the fish store said with live plants you would only need to clean the tanks every couple of months. WOW! So I decided to introduce Frank to our house! He is very well adjusted so far!
